DAY 21: Activity: You are older than you used to be...

How old will you be in seconds on your next birthday?
TMBG

Key Skills:

  • Dimensional Analysis (this is the idea being taught the answer is irrelevant)

    • failed strategy -->cross multiplication= crack you should not do it!
    • HW:
      • Make observations to Describe & list the steps in the process from class examples ->comment on blog
      • Apply the  steps to one or more of the practice problems from the link below
    • Practice page

Are we suppose to do the questions on the practice page??

  2. In class today, we had to make sure the units canceled each other out in a sense. We started with the unit we wanted to find and worked our way through the problem.

    Dimensional Analysis Steps
    1. Determine key terms/ numbers and write down.
    2. Determine what you know and what you need to find out.
    3. Setup problem with what you are looking for at the end.
    4. Start with largest term.
    5. Solve to find the last term you have written and make sure to cancel.
    6. Multiply leftover numbers and then divid if needed.
    7. Write answer with proper units attached.

      1. Figure out what numbers you need in order to find your answer
      2. Put the measurements of what you are looking for at the end of your equation
      3. Put your numbers(with the correct labels) and work your way to the end

  4. Unrelated but does anyone have the standard for tempature.

  5. 1. Find out major important information
    2. Determine the problem
    3. Make a hypothesis
    4. Test your hypothesis
    5. If it doesn't work repeat steps until it does work.

  7. 1.Start with the unit that you want to use but work backwards with the unit
2.Find the other units that are equivalent to the first unit
3.Cross out and work your way down as
you've found all of the equivalent units
4.Write the final answer you've found

  8. Are we supposed to do the practice problems in our notebook or post them here

•Start with the end in mind
    •Work backwards
•Cancel things out or cross multiply to make things easier
•Take the simplified problem and multiply all products together to reach the final answer

  10. 1. think about what type of answer you want to find (ex. seconds) and work from there
    2. Write out the unit next to your number
    3. multiply by the previous unit to cancel the units so you are left with numbers
    4. once you are down to the unit you want to end up with you will find the other units are all cancelled out and you are left with numbers
    5. Multiply the remaining numbers
    6. add on the unit you have been working towards
    7. circle your final answer

  11. 1. Start with your end goal and mind, in order to have a clear idea of what you need to find out.
    2. Determine the units you will be working with/comparing. (ex: cups per gallon)
    3. Work backwards and find a unit that is equivalent to your end result.
    4. Keep on finding conversions and set them up as a big multiplication problem. (Write conversions in fraction form. ex: 4 quarts/1 gallon)
    5. Multiply top and bottom then simplify fraction and attach the correct units.

  12. 1. Begin by showing what units the desired result should be in.
    2. Start from unit opposite of desired unit (example: if you are trying to find the smallest unit given, start at the largest unit given and work your way down to the least).
    3. Find the conversions of each unit and put it over the unit it was broken down from (example: 60 minutes/1 hour).
    4. Multiply the numbers on the top to get the quantity.
    5. Cross out the units used on the bottom to find the unit.

  13. 1.Begin with knowing what you're looking for.
    2. Determine what's is needed such as units to set up an equation.
    3. I prefer to start from the beginning, but you can work backwards until you get to your full equation.
    4. Cancel things on your equation.
    5. When everything is canceled, multiply and divide if necessary.
    6. You should have your answer by now. It does not need to be simplified.
    7. Go back and just make sure that you have all of the steps completed. Simply having an answer is not enough.

  14. 1. Figure out what you're trying to find.
    2. Keep the end in mind. Create an equation with what you want to end up with on the right side of the equal sign.
    3. Based on my personal preference, start with the smallest unit and work your way up to what you're trying to figure out.
    4. Write your equation in a way that everything cancels out except for what you want your end result to be.
    5. Do the math.
    6. Once you have your answer, it does not need to be simplified but it can be if that's what you prefer.
    7. Your process is more important than the actual answer so always go back and check your work.
